Mapping Out Your Kitchen

In many homes, kitchen design is centered around the idea of a work triangle: the refrigerator, range and sink are strategically placed as if separate points on a triangle. This concept was created in older kitchens to make efficient use of space. Many traditional kitchens thrive under this layout, but it can also pose some challenges. In kitchens with multiple cooks, extra appliances or abundance of space, a work triangle can actually become inefficient. If your kitchen could benefit from a fresh layout, design your space with practical work zones in mind.

Appliance Zone
If you have a morning coffee or tea routine, create a dedicated spot specifically for that task. Keep your coffee maker, espresso machine and teapot organized and accessible by adding a cabinet appliance garage that will keep items stowed away when not in use. Delegate drawer space nearby for spoons, teabags, and other utensils needed to keep your morning routine simplified.

Food Prep Zone
For those times when you have extra cooks in the kitchen, the traditional work triangle layout can become cramped.  Having landing areas of counter space between the refrigerator and the sink, or between the sink and the range, can serve as multipurpose zones, giving you and your helpers elbow room to accomplish the various stages of food preparation.

Entertaining Zone
If space allows, create a multi-purpose island in your kitchen that will enhance your cooking and entertaining needs. An island that features two tiers of counter space offers both food preparation and food serving stations. Rollout drawers inside island cabinets are perfect for storing snacks, and integrating a beverage fridge will keep cold drinks close at hand.

Clean Up Zone
Simplify clean-up time by placing your sink and dishwasher in a zone separate from other activities in the kitchen. Add a tip-out drawer under the sink for sponges and a rack inside a cabinet door for wet towels. Include pull-out trash and recycling bins nearby to bring even more functionality to the zone.
