Giving Back: Renovation Angel

When Susan Maounis bought a luxury home, she knew she wanted to rebuild it, but she did not know what to do with all of the kitchen appliances and fixtures that were still in good condition. That is when her architect referred her to Renovation Angel, a nonprofit organization that provides free, insured and professional removal of high-end kitchens. The materials are then packed up and transported to Green Demolitions, a 43,000-square-foot showroom in New Jersey, where they are sold for discounts of up to 90 percent. Proceeds from the sales then go to charitable organizations.
The mastermind behind Renovation Angel is founder Steve Feldman, who launched the concept in 2005. Since then, more than $2.2 million has been distributed to nonprofits that focus on at-risk youth, addiction recovery, job training and social entrepreneurship. One such organization is Focus North America, a national charity that provides school supplies for children in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
Feldman encourages homeowners to donate—not sell—their kitchens, because they will receive full tax deductions in doing so. But nonprofits and clients are not the only ones who benefit—so do the economy and the environment. The organization has created more than $16.8 million in jobs and has diverted an astonishing 27 million pounds from landfills nationwide.
